City Council buys into Mayor Reed's disastrous cuts

Added June 18th, 2010

The San Jose City Council voted Thursday (June 17) to follow Mayor Reed over the cliff of municipal disaster with a budget severely cutting City services.

The cuts in Reed's budget will significantly hamper the police department's ability to investigate and solve robbery, domestic violence and school crimes as well as close fire stations and libraries. Councilmember Nancy Pyle, supported by colleagues Ash Kalra, Nora Campos and Kansen Chu, attempted to block the cuts by moving funds from other parts of the budget but were out-voted by the Mayor and his allies.

While the political intent was to scapegoat City workers the real victims are the residents of San Jose whose lives and well-being were ignored.

The Council did delay the Mayor's attempt to impose on City unions even after unions with open contracts had met Reed's demand for 10 percent cuts in total compensation. The imposition vote is now scheduled for Tuesday, June 22, to give negotiators for both sides time to resolve technical issues about the pension aspects of the concessions.

The first class of 14 pre-apprentice roofers graduated Tuesday, June 15, from a four-week pilot training program designed to prepare workers for this developing green industry and provide them with direct access to job opportunities.

By the end of this week, half of the graduating class already had jobs.

The Apprentice Roofers Readiness Program is a joint effort of the Workforce Institute at the San Jose / Evergreen Community College District; Working Partnerships USA; work2future, Silicon Valley’s Workforce Investment Board; Roofers and Waterproofers Local 95 Journeylevel and Apprenticeship Training Program; the Building & Construction Trades Council of Santa Clara & San Benito Counties; and the International Brotherhood of Electrical Workers Local 332 / Electrical JATC.
