Added July 29th, 2010

The Rev. Nelson Rivers III, a civil rights leader and pastor of Charity Missionary Baptist Church in North Charleston, S.C., will speak on "Economic Justice and the Interfaith Community" at 6:30 p.m. Thursday, Aug. 5 in San Jose.

The event is co-sponsored by the San Jose / Silicon Valley NAACP and the Interfaith Council on Economics and Justice, a project of Working Partnerships USA, and will be held at Antioch Baptist Church, 268 E. Julian St.

Rivers, a native of Charleston and a local, state and national NAACP leader for 34 years, was one of the lead organizers of the largest civil rights demonstration in South Carolina history when more than 50,000 people marched on the state capitol to demand removal of the Confederate battle flag.
